The ‘it’ plant of 2018

A new year is about to begin, which gives rise to look back at the most popular plants of 2017. After a great cactus hype I have seen an increasing interest in tropical plants this year. Strelitzia Nicolai and banana palms have been a great hit – generally the bigger plants the better. Strelitzia Nicolai is still on my personal wish list and I hope it will find its way to my apartment in 2018, if I can just find 1000+ DKK in the budget (and space for it, hah). Also I have noticed a love for variegated plants as new cultivars and hybrids are developed. Like the rare variegated Monstera adansonii ‘Archipelago’ or the Royal Variegated Banana (Musa x paradisiaca ‘Ae Ae’)?

The one and only Monstera adansonii ‘Archipelago’.

But I can only think of one particular plant as the new it plant of 2018. I present to you Philodendron ‘Pink Princess’! I have already heard some rumours about its arrival in Copenhagen in summer 2018. So far in two plant stores, but I assume more will follow, because it is such a beautiful and easy caring plant! Pink Princess is most likely a hybrid from Australia, and has beautiful colourful variegated leaves like no other. New leaves emerge hot pink to burgundy in color. As leaves mature and enlarge they become rosy pink and reveal random streaks and specks of ivory and gray-green. Some leaves take on a purplish black hue, which is really rare seen in nature. I really hope for its arrival in Copenhagen so I can get this beauty myself. Happy new year!
